The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is sponsoring a new annual award, starting this spring, in honor of Shamarra Perry, a former Blair student who died in 2001.

Perry was crossing University Boulevard on her way to night school at Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School at the Northwood Center when she was fatally struck by a car, according to a press release from Montgomery County Department of Police.

Before her tragic demise, Perry worked at the Oaks of Four Corners, an independent living home on University Boulevard. As a tribute to Perry's memory, the PTSA will present an award to one Blair student who "best exemplifies Shamarra's dedicated care giving to elderly people," as stated in the announcement of the award.

Students will be chosen based on an application, which asks them to describe their service to the elderly. The award consists of $200 and a certificate.

Applications are due May 14 in the PTSA mailbox in the main office. The application should include information on contacting you and the organization where you work, as well as a description of your experience and its meaning to you.
