Community encouraged to participate
National Youth Service Day (NYSD) 2004, an event that provides young people with the opportunity to serve their community, will take place from April 16 through April 18. Youth in the area can participate in various projects in the Baltimore and D.C. areas.
Maryland's Lead Agency Project, sponsored by the Urban Leadership Institute, will take place in Baltimore. This organization gives teens in the community a chance to create and launch their own projects and take responsibility for the environment. Last year's NYSD activities included cleaning up Druid Hill Park, assisting Manna House Food Kitchen, reading to children and painting a community mural. This year, the institute plans on involving over 400 young people in various projects throughout the weekend.
The D.C. Commission on National and Community Service (DC-CNCS) will sponsor D.C.'s Lead Agency Project. DC-CNCS plans to mobilize over 10,000 youths and their families in about 70 service projects. According to the NYSD website, the organization's mission is to "strengthen and promote the spirit of service in the District of Columbia through partnerships, national service and volunteerism."
