Eric "Zork" Alan discusses poetry with creative writing students
National Slam Poet and author Eric "Zork" Alan visited Blair's IMC during 6th period yesterday, May 17, to discuss various aspects of poetry and present several pieces for students.
During the presentation Alan performed three pieces of poetry, interspersed between a discussion and workshop with the students. Among the themes discussed was the importance of inspiring new poets. "My job is to get everyone of you to write a poem today… that's my mission in life," he said.
In a question and answer session, Alan discussed his initial involvement, motivation and the rewarding aspects of writing poetry. "It's not about the money," he said, noting that many of his performances are free.
The presentation primarily targeted students enrolled in creative writing, several of whom performed later last night at the Bethesda Barnes & Noble with Alan. Creative writing students, including senior Sarah Janesko who presented "Angels in the South," performed their original pieces.
Although Zork commends other Slam poets, he explained that many new poets simply hear what they like and recreate the style. During the presentation, he stressed the importance of originality, advising students to "find [their] own voice."
