Chips wins 50 awards

The Maryland Scholastic Press Association awarded The Churchill Observer, Churchill High School's student newspaper, with the annual Marylander award for schools with population over 1,200 students. Silver Chips, Blair's newspaper, finished in as the first place runner-up behind the Observer and also won 50 other MSPA awards.

The results of the annual contest were announced in November. Silver Chips won 50 individual awards out of 127 possible print awards, 12 of them first place awards. Churchill won 12 print awards altogether, with the Marylander as their only first place finish.

Other notable finishers include Blake with 21 print awards, three of them first place finishes, and Pikesville and Catonsville with nine awards each.

Silver Chips Online won 14 out of 14 possible online awards. However, Silver Chips Online may be denied the Marylander award for best online paper, due to a rule inspired by last year's controversy over the presentation of the online Marylander award. Last year, the MSPA declined to award the Marylander to Silver Chips Online, the lone entrant. The new rule states that the MSPA does not have to award the Marylander unless there is more than one entrant.
