The Metro has installed new faregates that do not work with older SmarTrip cards

Beginning tomorrow, SmarTrip cards purchased before 2012 will no longer work and must be replaced.

To make the Metro experience more efficient for customers, Metro is starting to use new fare gates, fareboxes, and fare payment options at all stations and on all buses. The new fare gates at rail stations currently being installed and the upgraded fareboxes on buses that will be installed later this year will not accept SmarTrip cards purchased before 2012.

SmarTrip cards can be replaced online if you are not currently using the Metro or if you are a SmartBenefits user. If you are not a SmartBenefit user, you also have the option of replacing your card in-person at the Metro Sales Office at the Metro Center Station. More detailed information about replacing cards can be found here.

The balance on SmarTrip cards purchased before 2012 can also be transferred to a newer SmarTrip card or to a mobile SmarTrip card.
