Students for Global Responsibility sends students to event
The seventeenth annual Community Service Day sponsored by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center occurred this past Saturday, Oct. 25.
Local groups volunteered their time and services to the community by participating in a variety of projects. Blair's Students for Global Responsibility (SGR) sent a few of its members to East Silver Spring Elementary School to garden and pick up trash around the school.
Julia Leeman, an SGR member, listed the most memorable items found during the trash pick-up. "We found a whole guitar without strings and I'm going to fix it up and make an art project out of it. We also found a golf ball and bottles of Malt Liquor."
She said she enjoys clean-ups such as this because she can do her part to help the environment. "I need the hours for school," said Leeman, "but I also just like helping out. It annoys me that people don't take care of their surroundings. People can be so careless. They throw trash out the window and don't realize the impact they make."
The other group present at the elementary school was Social and Scientific Systems, Inc., an employment-owned company located on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. Louis Hintin works with the company and explained the reasons his group came out for the event. "Our agency is in the community so we're part of the community environment. We need to do our share. We need to clean the environment and keep children safe," Hintin said.
