Lax gives Titans the ax

The boys' lacrosse team won at Einstein 8-5 tonight, boosting its record to an impressive 3-1 while Einstein fell to 1-3 for the season.

The Blazers were led by senior attackman John Selby, who scored the team's first three goals, recording his hat-trick just 12:15 into the game. The Blazers never trailed in the game, but Einstein kept it close, as it tied the score, 3-3, with 6:45 left in the first half and only trailed by one goal, at 5-4 going in the fourth quarter.

Yet again, the Blazers dominated in the fourth quarter as junior attackman Josh Gottlieb-Miller scored two goals 57 seconds apart late in the final period of play to put the game out of reach. Gottlieb-Miller's first goal and a second quarter goal by junior midfielder Alex Berger came off Selby passes.

Blair's imposing defense in this very physical game and quality play by senior goalie Ben Schwengels, who consistently blocked key Titan shots, also led to the Blazer victory. Although offensive struggles for much of the third quarter almost let it slip by.

Selby feels that the team played well in many aspects. "We ran our offense well and we did well on extra man offense. Smart playing, patience and holding the ball well on offense [contributed to the victory]," he said.

Coach Bob Gibb, however, was dissatisfied with the offense. "We were creating good scoring chances, but we were either missing the goal or hitting the goalie. My major concern is that when we play some of the best teams in the county then we'll need more than eight goals," he said.

The offense will get a chance to improve when it plays Walter Johnson at home on April 4, at 7:00.
