Lady Blazers to tip-off new season

The girls' basketball team will look to improve their record for the fourth straight year in hopes of returning the team to the glory days of past decades.

Led by the senior twin towers of center Emily Ramsay and power forward Caroline Kuttner, the team has the potential to outdo last year's 10-12 record. Both players provide a dominating inside game and veteran leadership, as they have been staples of Blazer girls' basketball for the past three years. The low-post tandem should be a force to be reckoned with in the competitive Montgomery 4A division. Ramsey, last year's most improved player, averaged 9 points per game last year, the most out of any returning players.

Unfortunately, the Blazers lost three starters to graduation: point guard and court general Lara Dean, shooting guard and phenomenal three-point shooter Jennifer Sindall and MVP center Allyson Swailes. In addition, senior Kidesh Brown, who was expected to be the team's top perimeter player, may sit out this season.

Junior Brittany Higgins will stand in for Brown at point guard. Higgins, the team's captain along with Ramsay and Kuttner, will need to make a smooth transition from her role as the team's swingman to point guard. According to 23-year coach William Lindsey, she will need "patience, hard work and adjustment" to make the position change successful. Senior Simone Viger will start at small forward and should see added minutes.

The new-look squad will have to mesh and play together this season. Lindsey feels that the Blazers will need to build its chemistry to be successful. "[The team] has talent, it just has to fall into place and gel. Potentially, we have a good opportunity to win many games," he said.

Sophomores Kate Rassman and Janay Walker and junior Vicky Dean have impressed Lindsey during the fall Montgomery County Recreation Department League and this year's practices. These three key additions have moved up from last year's 15-2 JV team, and are expected to make contributions.

The Blazers will open their season on Dec 5 at 7:00 at Einstein.
