Winners to be announced in November

Silver Chips was named one of 45 national finalists for the Pacemaker award co-sponsored by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation on Sept. 15. Winners will be formally announced and awarded at the Journalism Education Association (JEA)/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention on Nov. 18-21, 2004 in Atlanta, GA.

About 10 school newspaper finalists are featured in the large school paper (17 or more pages) category, Silver Chips among them.

Silver Chips previously won the Pacemaker award in 2002 and 1975. Silver Chips Online won the Pacemaker Online Newspaper award in March 2004.

The list of 45 finalists featured 11 other school newspapers from the East Coast: The Muse from Dreyfoos School of the Arts (Florida); The Southerner from Henry W. Grady High School and Carpe Diem from Decatur High School (Georgia); Lion's Roar from Newton South High School (Massachusetts); Wingspan from West Henderson High School (North Carolina); The Record from Horace Mann School (New York); Orange Peal from Hayfield Secondary School, tjToday from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, A-Blast from Annandale High School, The Growl from Massaponax High School and Highlander from McLean High School (Virginia). A complete list of finalists can be found at the NSPA website.

The NSPA began distributing the Pacemaker award in 1927. The Newspaper Association of American Foundation became a co-sponsor of the award competition in 1971. Pacemaker contenders are judged on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics, according to the NSPA site.

Winners are judged and selected by the staff of a professional newspaper local to the JEA/NSPA Convention's host city. Last year's entries were judged by The Washington Post in Washington, D.C.

Silver Chips Online will be judged for the Pacemaker Online Newspaper award in Feb. 2005. Judging is based on design, navigation, writing/editing, graphics and interactivity. Finalists will be announced in March 2005, and winners will be publicized at the JEA/NSPA Spring High School Journalism Convention on April 7-10, 2005 in Seattle, WA.
