Blair second in nation in overall number of semifinalists
The Science Service today announced 12 Blair seniors as semifinalists in the 2003 Intel Science Talent Search.
The announcement of semifinalists was made on the Science Service's website at www.sciserv.org/sts. Last year, Blair led the nation with 17 semifinalists (see related story, Blair places first in national Intel Talent Search semifinalists). This year, however, Blair was second to Stuyvesant High School in New York, which had 19 of the nation's 300 total semifinalists.
An announcement of the 40 finalists will be made on Jan 29. The finalists will then convene at the National Academy of Sciences from Mar 6-11, to vie for a $100,000 first prize scholarship.
Blair's semifinalists are Mohamed Abutaleb, Matthew Baron, Joshua Chang, Christina Feng, Jeremy Hoffman, Evan Karlik, Sei-Wook Kim, William Lai, Andrew Lee, Anatoly Preygel, Alexander Sverdlov and Joseph Wakeman-Linn. Each semifinalist will recieve $1000, and Blair will recieve $12,000.
Maryland has a total of 19 semifinalists. Whitman and Wootton high schools each have one, bringing the Montgomery County total to 14.
