Info Flow, Blair Networks Communication's (BNC) daily morning announcement program, has stopped airing copyrighted material, according to supervisor Christopher Lloyd. Instead, Info Flow has asked music classes and local bands to submit recordings of their music to be used on the program.
Lloyd is unsure if BNC Radio will also have to heed to the newly established rule. He is trying to find out if the PA system, which is BNC radio's method of airing material, constitutes a distribution channel, which would prohibit BNC from airing copyrighted material.
Lloyd has consulted with Superintendent Jerry Weast's office and describes him as "skittish" on the copyright issue. "We're all a little cautious," said Lloyd. "We don't want to leave ourselves open for the recording industries [to sue]."
Lloyd made the decision to keep Info Flow copyright free after meeting with his lawyers over the summer. "After [the meeting], we realized that we need to be more careful of the things we broadcast," said Lloyd. "We have always been copyright free when broadcasting on the county cable, but we're becoming more cautious about in house material as well."
Info Flow has been copyright-free for several episodes, using material
submitted by Blair bands. "Local bands that record their own music should submit it to BNC," said Ilene Arnsdorf, the coordinating producer of Info Flow. "It's a great chance for them to get some exposure."
