DEC. 14, PG SPORTS AND LEARNING CENTER-

Blair's indoor track team showed promise at the first MCPS Developmental Meet of the season today at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Center. All MCPS high schools ran in this developmental meet, where no scores or rankings were recorded.

According to distance coach Carl Lewin, the purpose of these meets is to give runners practice and to allow coaches to learn the capabilities of their runners. "It helps athletes gauge and get a handle on their current times. It also helps coaches determine the skills of their athletes and determine what workouts they should be doing," he said.

Coach Amell was happy with the effort shown by the runners. "I'm pleased, absolutely," she said. Even though this meet was just a scrimmage, it did not stop Blair runners from running hard, especially the members of the girls' 4x200 meter relay. The team of Allison Rubin, Lizzie Horne, Maggie Sullivan and Danielle Peck showed great spirit to come from behind to win their heat. At the beginning of the race, Rubin dropped the baton, but not giving up, she went back and picked it up, continuing to run even though she was now several seconds behind, a major gap in a short sprinting race. Two hundred meters later, when she passed the baton to Horne, she had pulled into third. Horne, Sullivan and Peck maintained third place, with Peck coming through in the last few meters to finish first. "It was so amazing, we were like four seconds behind and then we won," Horne said.
