How The Grinch stole my heart

Illumination Entertainment's newest movie, The Grinch, is filled with humorous and sweet scenes. The 2018 remake of the 1957 adaptation of the children's book How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss is directed by Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney. Modeled after Seuss' character design, The Grinch brings a punch of color that makes it perfect for the kids.

The personality of the characters is the most appealing aspect of the movie. The Grinch's (Benedict Cumberbatch) coldness balances the perkiness of the Who's of Whoville. Donna Who (Rashida Jones) is a hardworking mother of three who frequently works the night shift as a nurse. Though she is often tired and loaded with responsibilities, she finds time to provide happiness and love for her children. On the other hand, the Christmas-hating Grinch grumbles and glares his way through life, with frequent displays of hate toward the Whos.

Directors Mosier and Cheney further add to the charm by bringing in the Grinch's adorable animal sidekick. Max is a tiny dog and is fiercely loyal to his owner. From making the Grinch's breakfast to preparing showers for his master, his quirky acts make him stand out. Ultimately, Max serves as an important character who provides warmth to an otherwise frozen heart.

The voice actors of the movie are cast perfectly for their individual roles. Pharrell Williams has a rhythmic cadence to his voice that works well with the rhymes, whereas Cumberbatch's voice is appropriately grouchy and accurately portrays the Grinch's mean spirit. The Christmas-themed soundtrack plays all of the classics, "Jingle Bells" and "Deck the Halls," which add a pleasant rhythm to the movie's uplifting spirit.

Although the movie is primarily based on Dr. Seuss's iconic book, the simplicity of the film allows even those unfamiliar with the original plot to understand the movie’s storyline. As for those who have read the book as a child, this movie brings about a sense of comfort and nostalgia. Now, with this latest animated version of the movie, new generations of children can gain inspiration from the heartwarming story about the holiday spirit. 

Through the Grinch's cynical quips and the unfaltering optimism of the Whos, the movie is highly entertaining for all. The movie teaches us the valuable lesson that people can change. As with every other Christmas movie classic, it speaks to the togetherness of the holidays, rather than the spirit of "present-buying." Although the movie’s target audience is young children, it is a must-see for anyone who enjoys an adorable story about the importance of celebrating together.

The Grinch was released on Nov. 9 and is rated PG for families. It is now playing in theaters at AMC Wheaton 9, Regal Majestic Stadium 20 & IMAX, AMC Academy 8, and AMC Center Park 8.
