Coed team named state champs, boys come close
Blair's unofficial mixed – coed – ultimate frisbee team swept the high school division Maryland State Ultimate Frisbee High School Championships in Catonsville on May 19 and Blair's open – all-male – team won three out of four games. Despite gusty winds and limited substitutes, both teams performed well against teams from around the state.
For the championship, the team split in two. Senior co-captain Camden Lee played on the mixed team, while senior co-captain Daniel Keller played on the open team.
In its first game Blair's open team took on players from Magruder High School. Blair's defense thwarted most of Magruder's attempts at scoring, making the final score a 13-4 win. This game settled the score with Magruder who had beaten Blair in a game earlier this season.
Blair's mixed team's own first game was against Westmar from Allegheny County. Blair took advantage of Westmar's weak forehand throws, but before long a Westmar player took out senior co-captain Camden Lee. Lee blacked out for several seconds and sat out for the remainder of the game but was able to play for the remainder of the championship. Blair defeated Westmar with a final score of 10-6.
Meanwhile, Blair's open team faced off against the Hodad Priests from Urbana High School in Frederick County. Blair players noted the speed and intensity of the Urbana team. "The thing is, they're all pretty good handlers. They play rough," said senior player Nick Mozer.
Urbana maintained a three point lead until Homecooked's senior Paul Ishimoto brought the score to a tie at eight points. Ishimoto and junior Walker Hatchett scored most of the points by catching Keller's long, down-field passes. Both teams were exhausted by 12:10, when Urbana brought the score to 11-9 for Home Cooked's only loss of the day.
Back on the mixed field, Homecooked faced the P-Bufs of Paint Branch, who scored their three only points in the second half. Homecooked scorers included senior Alli Kator, junior Marie Mencher and freshman Alejandro Newell. The final score was 13-3 with Blair on top.
In the final mixed game, Homecooked faced the Westmar team once again. Homecooked played relentlessly, though a result of their tight defense was senior Josh Uzzell was hit three times in his right eye by blocking the path of Westmar's throws. Homecooked won with 13-6, making them the Maryland State Champions for high school teams in the Ultimate Players Association (UPA).
The open team won two more games, crushing Park High School 14-0 and taking out Bethesda-Chevy Chase 13-4.
