Local events and festivities

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for people from Spanish-speaking countries to pay homage to their origins and for others to enjoy the influence Hispanic culture has had on America.

Beginning on September 15, which marks the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, festivities in the area will include a Fiesta Musical from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. September 21; admission is free. An art exhibit entitled Our Voices, Our Images at the Inter-American Development Bank's Cultural Center will also be on display from Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. until October 17; admission is free.

On Saturday, September 13 at 7 p.m., local channel 4 WRC is airing its seventeenth annual Hispanic Heritage Awards with performances by Hispanic artists such as Fat Joe, Shalim, India and Yerba Buena.

At the National Aquarium in Baltimore, September 26 is Hispanic Heritage Night (5 p.m. - 10 p.m.; admission is $5). There will be guest performances by Grupo Latino Continental and Mariachi Las Estrellas, salsa lessons, bilingual tours of the Seahorses: Beyond Imagination exhibit, and a session to learn about aquarium career and educational opportunities.

Hispanic Heritage Month ends on October 15.
