Fannie Mae Foundation to hold annual event

The 17th annual Help the Homeless 5K Walkathon will take place this Saturday, Nov. 20 between Fourth and Seventh Streets NW on the National Mall beginning at 7:00 a.m. Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for participants 25 and under.

Check-in for pre-registered walkers and on-site registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Pennsylvania Ave, NW, between Third and Fourth Streets near the National Gallery of Art. The walk will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will be followed by a live music performance featuring an artist to be announced soon.

Proceeds from the event will go towards 180 nonprofit beneficiary organizations that assist the homeless.

According to its web site, Help the Homeless' mission is to "raise awareness of and funds for Washington, D.C., metropolitan-area nonprofit organizations that are working to prevent and end homelessness." The walkathon also "fosters volunteerism in service to the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless."

The Help the Homeless program was created in 1988 by Fannie Mae to respond to the increasing problem of homelessness. The goal of the Fannie Mae Foundation is to "help more families achieve the American Dream of homeownership."

To access the event via Metrorail, take the Green/Yellow Line to Archives/Navy Memorial or take the Red Line to Judiciary Square.
