Gymnasts balance out their season with a strong season ender
Finishing the season on a high note, the gymnastics team pulled its best team score ever, setting a school record at the county competition on May 4. With a score of 151.9, the team showed great improvement and dedication, managing to knock their previous record of 147.7 onto the mat.
Freshman Lisa Wong pulled out on top for Blair and fourth all around in the individual standings with a score of 36.45. Coupled with this latest performance at the counties, Wong's consistent success over the course of the season earned her an invitation to the state championships on May 11.
A multitude of excellent individual efforts on each of the four events by a number of girls contributed to Blair's success at this meet. Wong, Freshmen Nicole Poor and sophomore Raya Steinberg all scored personal bests on the vault competition with 8.75, 8.2 and 8.25, respectively. Steinberg, Wong and senior Elana Kanter earned personal bests on the balance beam with scores of 7.95, 9.325 and 6.8, respectively. Steinberg and Wong also made a difference on bars, each with a personal best of 6.85 and 9.05, respectively. Finally, on the floor competition, senior Lizzie Bryant pulled a personal high of 7.1 and Wong scored a high of 9.325.
This final meet is a positive one for the lady Blazers, showing that they have definitely improved and giving the seniors on the team something very good to exit with. This year's departing seniors are Amanda Allen, Lizzie Bryant, Elana Kanter and Denise Sylla.
More information to come on the results of tomorrow's state competition.
