Finishes in second place

OCTOBER 13- RATTLEWOOD GOLF COURSE

The Blair Golf team had a fantastic second place performance in the County Tournament as the team wraps up their 11-2 season.

The team shot an excellent 30, six below par, in best ball scramble play. This means all four players for a school shoots a hole and the entire team shoots from whereever the best shot landed. Also, there is only a team score recorded. For Blair the consistent top four golfers played the tournament, the senior tandem of Ben Payes, and Zach Mellman, and juniors Neal Vasilak and Bill McManigle.

The Blazers were able to tie Wooton and Whitman for second place by shooting an impressive six birdies and three pars. Walter Johnson won the tournament, only beating Blair by one stroke. Blair was playing against the top 11 teams in the county; the bottom 11 teams had a separate tournament.

Blair was swinging their clubs well and was able to capitalize off each other's play. "I was hitting the ball far off the tee. Overall, I was playing well on the round," said Payes.

The Blazers were able to come off an uninspired, but unimportant match play tournament loss and return to their earlier season form. "We were just having fun and hitting shots," said Payes.

The second place finish was a great accomplishment for the Blair golf team. The Team had an 11-2 record in the weaker Kohut division, but at the tournament the Blazers were able to compete with the best teams in the county.

This performance should make a strong statement about the high level of Blair's golf program. "It was a perfect finish to the season and now Blair golf will hopefully have a little respect," said Vasilak.

The Blazers final game on Monday, October 20 is a make-up division match against Richard Montgomery, Kennedy and Poolesville at Hampshire Greens. Blair will need to beat Richard Montgomery in order to win the Kohut division.
