MARCH 24, BLAIR TRACK FIELD -

Despite rising two divisions and losing key runners from last year's team, the girls' track team slammed Seneca Valley unofficially 91-36. The boys, however, could not rise to the new level of competition and lost unofficially 60-79.

The girls' team showed strength all-around, in distance, sprinting and field events. "We have a lot of talent in all different events," commented senior co-captain and sprinter Nicole Gray. Freshmen Ashlyn and Halsey Sinclair swept the distance events, including the 3200m, 1600m, 800m and the 300m hurdles.

Juniors Narique Dixon, Brittany Higgins and Gray took top three in the 100m dash, respectively. Gray and Dixon placed first and second in the 200m. In the field events, senior Emily Ramsey dominated the discus and senior Deena Thompson took first in the high jump with only a 4'2". "Despite moving up two divisions, Seneca Valley was not much competition. The real test will be the upcoming meets against teams like Walter Johnson," Gray said.

The boys' team competed well in the distance events, thanks to senior co-captains Matt Sheldon and Esey Kidane. However, failures in middle-distance and sprinting events pulled the team's score down. Seneca Valley took almost all scoring positions in the 100m and 200m with ease. Senior Perry Smith nearly clinched first place in the long jump, but stepped back losing two feet that would have scored him five points the team desperately needed.

The team looks forward to competing this coming Tuesday, March 30, at Poolesville at 3:30.
