Blazers win their second game in a row
Blair, April 9-
The Blair girls' varsity lacrosse team cruised to a dominant 12-3 victory over the Watkins Mill Wolverines to improve their record to 2-1 on the season.
After a sloppy and a bit unorganized first half the Blazers stepped up their game in the second half to put away the Wolverines. The Blair offense continued to roll following their 15-goal performance against Einstein. Defensively the Blazers were able to shut down the Watkins Mill attack.
Senior co-captain Lauren Finkel scored four goals and one assist to lead the Blazers. Finkel has scored at least three goals in each of Blair's three games this season and is averaging over four goals a game. Blair's other co-captain, senior Erica Nowak, had a great offense game as well as she contributed three goals and three assists. Nowak and Finkel connected several times to score for the Blazers and have combined for the bulk of Blair's scoring. Senior Alexa Gabriel has adjusted well to being moved up from her defensive position to attack wing and scored two goals, while senior Christina Ji scored from defense, which was the first goal of her career. Juniors Maddie Driskill and Diana Frey scored a goal a piece.
After narrowly defeating the Wolverines last year by a single goal, Blair was able to control the ball and tempo of the game. In the second half the Blazers were able to win a majority of the draws but did struggle with groundballs in part due to the high grass. Offensively, the Blazers relied on unsettled play and fast breaks to score, instead of set plays.
The Blazers will face a tougher test on Wednesday, April 13 as they play Sherwood at home at 7:00 p.m. Against stronger opponents, like Sherwood, the Blazers will have to play even better and not rely on the weaknesses of the opposing team.
