Blazers slide by Rockets in home opener

MARCH 23, BLAZER STADIUM—

Early in the season, the girls' lacrosse team (2-0) has shown a marked improvement over last season, when the team ended their season with a 2-11 record. The Blazers sped past the Richard Montgomery Rockets today in a game that showed promise for the rest of the season.

Led by strong offensive power-houses sophomore Susie Branson and seniors Elena Talbott and captain Devon Madison, the Blazers quickly took the lead with a goal in the second minute by Branson, quickly followed by a second from junior Rachita Sood.

Sophomore Katelyn Luker excelled as goalkeeper, with 14 total saves for the game. She was supported by veteran defender senior captain Karla Berberich and newcomer freshman Emily Hedrick.

The Blazers continued to march past the Rockets during the first half with goals from Branson and junior Helen Anderson. The Rockets scored twice, ending the first half with the Blazers up 5-2.

The second half started off poorly, with an early goal by the Rockets. However, the Blazers responded quickly as Madison scored off a penalty shot five minutes into the half.

After a few minutes of back and forth play, senior captain Dana Ballard scored off an assist from Branson. The Rockets would score twice more, but the Blazer defense ably held off a comeback attempt, ending the game victorious at 7-5.

The Blazers are off to a running start this season, but still have much room for improvement, said Coach Mike Horne. "I think the girls showed a lot of heart today," said Horne. "It was sloppy, we missed some chances early where we didn't capitalize, but 2-0 is fantastic." Horne noted that last season Blair lost to Watkins Mill and Richard Montgomery, both teams which they have now defeated.

The Blazers' spirit was bolstered by an impressive fan turnout at their first home game, led by energetic announcer and Blair parent Karl Berberich.

The team is extremely excited about their current record, and is looking forward to a successful season, said Madison. "We held on to the lead, and did what needed to be done — a win is a win," she said. "We're really exuberant."

The team's next game will be Monday, March 26 at Einstein.
