Fitta and Ulasevich elected as 2012 class president and vice president
Nebiyu Fitta and Liam Ulasevich were elected as freshman class President and Vice President respectively in the elections held last Thursday and Friday during U.S. History classes. Election speeches were held Wednesday during second period in the auditorium to familiarize voters with the candidates the class of 2012, and results were announced today.
Although Fitta has no previous SGA experience, he believes he can raise spirit and unity within the class of 2012. His primary goal is to ensure freshmen are involved in planning school events. "I want to make a really good homecoming and get people really hyped up for pep rallies," Fitta said in his speech last Wednesday. "I want to make sure this class is the best at Blair or any school for that matter."
Similarly, Ulasevich admitted he lacked SGA experience in his campaign speech, instead opting to appeal to school spirit. He dressed up as a Teletubby for his address, gaining much applause and enthusiasm from the audience. Ulasevich wants to be a part of SGA because he believes it would be a great experience and wants to get to know the freshmen class. "I really want to find out what the freshmen want and need and talk to them about problems they have," Ulasevich said. He suggested improving communication between representatives and students by using suggestion boxes placed throughout the school.
SGA Executive President junior Sibyl Brown said she was pleased that the speech assembly went smoothly and without delay. "The freshmen payed attention, which was good because a lot of teachers don't like having class interrupted," Brown said.
Unlike in previous years, freshmen will not have a secretary or treasurer as part of their class council, according to Brown. "Last year they weren't really needed for anything," Brown said. "We rarely saw them."
The process to become a candidate for freshman office began earlier this month, and included a Petition for Office and a mandatory meeting with other candidates and current officers, according to SGA Parliamentarian Thafhim Siddiqua.
The role of class officers is to hold fundraisers to raise money for the sole use of their class. The class president leads his or her respective Class Council with the help of the vice president, according to Siddiqua.
Students voted in the auditorium on laptops using their ID numbers and an assigned voter code.
