Floor hockey frenzy

As another week passes, the Blair Intramural Floor Hockey League (BFHL) could not get more exciting. There were upsets, dominations, tear-jerkers and heart breakers; the excitement was so hot even the Inferno couldn't handle it. The week started out with a big win for the Iron Chefs, who had yet to score twice in a game, as they put up a masterful performance against the Ninjas, who are in a heated battle with 5B Lunch for second-to-last place spot. Despite only scoring two goals, the Chefs dominated with 13 shots on goal.

The following game was a forfeit by 5B lunch, who once again failed to field a team. This forfeit gave the Fighting Funkmasters their fourth victory and kept them in a three way tie for first place. The Inferno overshadowed both games, however, with a stunning performance against the sophomore-based Champions.

The Champions, who are not always the most competitive team, make up for it in heart and team spirit. "No matter what the score is at the end of the day, we always win in my heart," said sophomore forward Annie Worden.

But heart couldn't save them this time, as the Champions lost to the Inferno despite playing with a two man advantage the entire game. The Inferno used senior Scott Lavon as a mid-fielder. This set the game offensively because of his ability to transition the ball up from the defense to junior forward Alex Sandberg-Bernard, who continues to lead the league in goals with two more against the Champions.

The Inferno, despite getting beat on defense, was able to keep the game a shutout with several great saves by senior Robbie Ginsberg. The deciding factor, however, was a lack of defense by the Champions. "They had some different defensive breakdowns that worked out in our favor, and we just tried to capitalize on them," said Sandberg-Bernard.

Despite all the excitement during day one, day two of this floor hockey frenzy was the day to see. The first game between 5B Lunch and The Inferno was a blow-out. The Inferno, who was unable to score in the first half, put in five goals in the second half and put the freshmen team firmly in their place. Despite the big loss, the young 5B Lunchers showed a lot of improvement and hope for the future.

The Fighting Funkmasters, who are making a name for themselves on the court, also dominated in their game, putting in quick goals and running up the score early. The final score of the game was 4-0, and the magnet-based Ninjas did not have much of a chance. The game of the week however was the gut-wrenchingly close match between the Champions and The Iron Chefs.

The game started off evenly, and the Champions came very close to scoring early. Sophomore Jon Kesten and junior Tobi Adeoye, who comprise the entire Champion offense, came very close to scoring twice. Kesten had one shot on goal that was blocked with an amazing save by junior Breton Sheridan, while Adeoye had a shot that barely missed the top left corner of the goal.

With an offense that relies on strong forceful attacks, the Chefs had six shots that barely missed the net, which was largely because of a great performance by sophomore Andy Holmes. Junior mid-fielder Alex Demerais had another solid game. He was a crucial factor, stopping many breakaways and potential goals at the half-court line. Demerais worked especially well with Junior Katie Scott, yet the two failed to connect for any goals

With twenty seconds left in the game, the Chefs recovered the ball at the top of the key after an excellent cross by Scott. The ensuing shot was on target, however it smashed Holmes in the facemask and bounced out wide. The whistle blew and the game was over, a devastating outcome to the Chefs, who look to make up ground in the next week.

The BFHL will play out its last week before exams and will take a week long break during the tests. It looks to be a riveting second half, and all teams are coming out ready to play.
