Five Blair students received writing honors from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) and the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers for their original poetry, features, opinions and reviews.
Senior Silver Chips writers Melanie Thompson, John Visclosky and Sheila Rajapogal were finalists in the 2005 CSPA Gold Circle Awards. Visclosky received first place for his entertainment review, "Reel-Life Islam Lacks Realistic Touch." Thompson received second place for her feature, "The Straight Truth about Students with Gay Parents," and Rajapogal received second place for her opinion, "Self-Segregation Divides School along Racial Lines."
The CSPA Gold Circle Awards attracted over 10,000 entries from the middle and high school level this year. Judges named 556 winners as first, second or third place or honorable mention, according the CSPA web site. Blair students made up half of all Maryland students to receive Gold Circle Awards in the News Publication category.
In the 2005 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers awarded senior Alexander Foreman and junior June Hu Gold Key Awards for their original poetry and journalistic pieces, respectively.
Foreman's poems, "No More Autumn Poems," "Christmas Sonnet," Invitational Sonnet," et al and Hu's feature "Clouds with Crystal Lining" will be judged at the national level along with the submissions of 25,000 other regional winners; 1,200 will be chosen to receive national awards, according to Scholastic's website.
