Student sent to hospital for head injury

A fight yesterday during 5A between a Blair junior, a senior and at least two other students resulted in one student being sent to the hospital because of a head abrasion.

According to administrator Patricia Hurley, a dispute "started in the community and spilled into school." Hurley believes that the administration has "found everyone involved and took appropriate measures against them." She also emphasized that the injury was not serious and the injured student will "be fine."

Business teacher Jacquelyn Shropshire taught the two main students. Both students have been suspended for ten days, according to Shropshire. "I worried about their grades. It'll be hard for them to catch up and graduate," said Shropshire, referring to the fact that there are only six days of school left for seniors and a few more juniors.

Blazer parent Ginny Billhimer wrote in the Blair parent listserv, an email service that allows parents to keep in touch, that her son witnessed a student being carried away on a stretcher immediately after the event. Billhimer further noted that the fight "sparked a lot of other less traumatic fighting in the school."

Senior Ryan Dean said, "One guy picked the other guy up and threw him down and his head was cracked open."

Billhimer and Dean both noted that many students were crying in the halls throughout the afternoon.
