Blazers record doesn't reflect effort

The Blair Girls varsity field hockey team had a disappointing season as they struggled early on and were unable to make a turnaround. The team finished with a 2-11 record, but did show some spark in their losing season.

Blair struggled to score as they were shut out eight times this season and only had six goals and two multiple goal games. Without a productive offense the Blazers were unable to compete against the stronger teams in the county. The Blazers struggled to finish, but also had trouble getting the ball to the forwards.

As the season progressed the team did improve on ball control and play in the midfield. A change in formation against Wheaton moved senior captain Alexa Gabriel into the midfield, which helped the Blazers possess and transition the ball. Since the team's first 0-7 loss to Damascus they played with more heart and more organization, however this improvement was not reflected in their record and goal differential.

According to senior co-captain Rachel Feely-Kohl, the team's record did not reflect the quality of the season. "Our record was not very strong, but we really did have fun and did our best to overcome obstacles," said Feely-Kohl.

The six seniors were key contributors to the team all season. The three co-captains Gabriel, Feely-Kohl and Julia Penn were among the team's most skilled players and led with their competitive play on the field. Senior forward Christina Do led the team in scoring, while Caitlin Garlow and Feely-Kohl both scored a goal this season.

Next season the Blazers will look to replace the seniors with a strong core of young players. The JV team had a strong season going 5-5-2 and will look to bring their winning ways to varsity. Upcoming players from JV could boost the team next year, including sophomore goalkeeper Maura Druhan. Several sophomores were on the varsity squad this season and will see more playing time and responsibility next season. The team will rely on juniors Julie Spatz and Sydney Valdez to lead the Blazers next season. The Blazers hope to build on the positives of the 2004 season, but to add a few more wins to their record.
