Aggressive play boosts Blair's record to 4-7

The varsity field hockey team combined aggressive offense and steadfast defense to shut out Rockville High School 2-0 at home, bringing the Blazers to a record of 4-7 with one game left in the season.

Rockville's offense did not present a huge challenge to the Blazers, but Blair's defense stood their ground, not letting Rockville score once against them. The Blazers' offense was especially aggressive, producing strong drives and long passes in spite of poor field conditions and unreliable officiating. According to junior Leah Cowdrey, the many whistles throughout the game provided the Blazers with plenty of openings for long passes. "The game was pretty stop-and-go with the refs, so there were a lot of good opportunities for drives," she said.

Blair scored early in the first half but the goal was taken away because it hit someone's foot before it went in. The Blazers concentrated on improving passes in the second half, which led them to victory, according to senior Leslie Auerbach. "We were passing a lot better [in the second half]," she said.

Cowdrey and senior Juliana Stevenson scored the two Blair goals in the second half. According to Cowdrey, the goal credited to her was hit into the goal the Rockville goalie's foot.
