Immigration debate will be highlighted

The National Capital Immigration Coalition will host five Immigrant Unity Day events on Monday, May 1 in honor of International Workers' Day. The events will take place in Langley Park, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Arlington and Richmond from 5-8 p.m.

Democratic representatives in the Maryland House of Delegates Victor Ramirez and Ana Sol Guttierez are expected to attend the event in Langley Park along with other community, religious and labor leaders. The Langley Park event, to be held in Manor Lane Community Park, will also feature music and activities for children.

The event will also provide opportunities for immigrants to register to vote, to sign petitions to their senators and to learn more about the services offered in their communities. Speakers will discuss the immigration debate, including proposed immigration reforms and workers' rights.

CASA de Maryland, a community organization, expects 3,000 immigrants and immigration rights advocates to attend the event in Langley Park. All are welcome to attend and set up their own table.

CASA is looking for volunteers to help man petition tables at the Langley Park event. If you are interested or want more information, contact Liz Alex at ealex@casamd.org or at (301) 431-4185 x223.
