Maryland feels first earthquake in 30 years
An earthquake, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, was felt in the Washington area around 3:59, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicenter of the quake was about 30 miles west of Richmond.
Local TV news sources reported that callers from Baltimore to North Carolina had reported feeling the earthquake. An earthquake of 4.5 causes little to no damage.
The last time that Maryland felt an earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey, was February 28, 1973, when an earthquake of 3.8 with an epicenter near Delaware woke up many residents. Most earthquakes occur at 2.0 or less on the Richter scale, and are never felt above ground.
