Photo: These 22 Corinthian sandstone columns are among 24 that were part of the east central portico of the U.S. Capitol. They create the backdrop for many inaugurations and have been the site of many speeches, protests and rallies. The columns were dismantled in 1958, but were restored through the efforts of Ethel Sheilds Garrett and with support from the Friends of the National Arboretum.
