Blair takes first place in senior division
The Blair computer team won first and second place in the Senior and Intermediate divisions, respectively, at the 2003 American Computer Science League (ACSL) All-Star Contest.
In the Senior division, the team of juniors Lauren Cohen and Kenny Yan and sophomores Eric Ma, Lauren Smith and Max Wasserman took first place, and in the Intermediate division, sophomore Ari Halper-Stromberg and freshmen Mitchell Katz, John Silberholz, Yao Xu and Chelsea Zhang placed second.
The teams won a digital camera for Blair and each student received books and computer software as prizes.
Computer Team Co-sponsor Mary Ann Dvorsky was greatly pleased with the team's performance. "The students are thrilled, and we teachers are thrilled for them," she smiled.
Because this year's teams did not include any seniors, Dvorsky predicts a strong showing at next year's ACSL competition as well.
In each of the three divisions, Senior, Intermediate and Junior, ACSL hosts four computer science contests throughout the school year, each consisting of a quiz and programming problem. After the four contests are completed, the five students with the highest individual scores in each division are selected for the Blair team.
Every year, the ACSL national contest is held at a member high school, according to Dvorsky, and this year, the competition was held at Troy High School in Fullerton, CA.
