The College Board will also add a new portion to the SAT. The writing test, a 50- to 60-minute section, will consist of an essay and multiple-choice questions.
The new three-section exam allows students to achieve a maximum of 2400 points instead of 1600. Along with the greater numbers of points and sections, the test will also be 30 minutes longer—for a total of three and a half hours—in order to accommodate the essay portion. The cost of the test will also rise from $26 to $38.
In the verbal section, critical reading passages on various topics will replace analogies.
The math section will cover higher-level math and will not include those questions that asked test takers to compare quantities.
Freshman Christopher McNair, who will take the exam in 2005, is not bothered by the essay. "I think that the Blair teachers have been attempting to prepare freshmen well in the first couple weeks of school," said McNair.
Laura McCullough, an English and SAT prep teacher at Blair, opposes the revisions. "The analogies tested logic, an essential characteristic of what is needed in college," she said.
