Classes that captivate

With schedules due Feb 24 [Editor's note: registration has been postponed see related story (will open in seperate window)], registration for the 2003-2004 school year is rapidly approaching. The courses below are some unusual and enjoyable classes recommended by students who have taken them, liked them and spread the word.

Cultural anthropology: This survey course is an introduction to anthropology, the science of humans as both physical and cultural creatures. No standard curriculum means the specific topics covered in class are determined largely by student interest.

Origins of Science: Although offered through the Magnet, this science elective is open to all interested students. Using little math, the course examines science in a historical context, looking at many of the philosophies and theories that are the basis for modern-day science.

Web Design: From a rotation of three teachers, students learn technical and artistic elements of web design as well as their practical application.

Shakespeare: A relatively new course, this class gives students the opportunity to discuss and perform scenes from many of Shakespeare's works with drama teacher Kelly Newman, who has studied and acted at the Globe Theatre.

Comparative Religion: This course objectively examines a variety of religions from around the world, including each religion's historical evolution and major beliefs. Students will also study how the religions are currently practiced.

Research in International Studies: Based on Billy Joel's song "We Didn't Start the Fire," this course allows students to do an in-depth research project on a historical event or figure of interest. Final projects range from multi-media presentations to theatrical performances in front of the class.
