Chips hunt for records

Montgomery Blair High School has a vast athletic history, yet very little of it is known. Why? Because there has never been a comprehensive list of Blair sports records. Students are unaware of our county winners, our state qualifiers and our champions—until now.

The Silver Chips sports department has begun to compile a living record of Blazer athletic achievements. We have slaved over yearbooks and issues of Silver Chips dating back to the 1940s to find the most relevant sports facts in Blair history.

A more complete list of records will eventually be posted on Silver Chips Online (http://silverchips.mbhs.edu). However, these records are far from complete. While helpful, the back issues of Silver Chips and Blair yearbooks are limited in their scope. We welcome any information to enhance the validity, quantity and depth of records that exist. Please e-mail information to silverchips@mbhs.edu.

Below is a taste of some significant and interesting records we have found so far.

Boys' basketball
•The all-time scoring leader for varsity basketball is Brian Magid (class of '75), with 1,056 points. His average of 23.9 points-per-game is also the highest single-season mark in Blair history.

Girls' basketball
•Girls' basketball had a 26-0 record in the 1983-1984 season.
•Until 2000, Blair had not suffered a losing season under Coach William Lindsey, who has been head coach since 1983.
• Charlene Thomas (class of ‘83), a former Blair basketball player, was a Washington Post All-Met team member and a first-team All-American. In '83, she averaged 22 points and 13 rebounds per game.

Indoor track
•In 1981, Blair's Michelle Collins won the 200-meter dash in the Junior Olympics and was the first sophomore to win two events at the state meet.
•In 1983, Lance Fletcher, Allan Collins, Tony McCloud and Chris Jones set a school record in the 1600 meter run with a time of 3:30.72.

Swimming and diving
•In the 1984-1985 season, junior Matt Hunt placed third in the state and won the regional swim meet.
•In the 1996-1997 season, Rebecca Coppola broke records in the 500-yard free and 100-yard back strokes.

Wrestling
•Blair had two county champions last year, Camilo Rincon (class of '01) and Mario Bracamontes (class of '02).
•Wrestler Jeff Edelstein (class of '00) placed second in the county, second in the region, and third in the state.
