V-ball soars over Seneca Valley

APRIL 14, SENECA VALLEY—

After nearly two weeks off the court, the boys' volleyball team returned to action against Seneca Valley, defeating the Screaming Eagles 25-22, 27-25 and 25-16 in three lively matches and boosting its record to 4-1.

The Blazers began the night with a solid start, acing several serves and scoring strong kills from all parts of the court. However, the Blazers soon found themselves overwhelmed by Seneca Valley's strong blocking, which rejected Blair attacks from both the middle and outside positions. Though the Blazers eventually adjusted to the Eagles' block, they would prove to be a formidable force throughout the game, shutting down seven Blair hits in the first match alone.

Despite the strength of Seneca Valley's blockers, Blair was able to claim consistent victories thanks to the flexibility of senior setter Tim Yang and the strength of its powerful offensive squad. Junior outside hitter James Lee led the Blazers with 13 of the team's 32 kills, and seniors James Gao and Bailey Zhang scored a combined nine middle kills. The Blazers also stepped up their playing by acing 14 serves and sending the Eagles' defense scrambling to save many more.

Blair's hitters could not have been successful without the support of the team's defensive players, who provided consistent digs throughout most of the game. Though the Blazers suffered a brief streak of overpassing and poor coverage early in the second match, they quickly adjusted to Seneca Valley's offense and allowed only nine kills and two aces through all three matches. Despite the absence of senior defensive anchor Sam Wen, juniors Kevin Kahn and Paul Wong both stepped up with numerous quick saves.

According to junior hitter Randolph Li, the team's triumph is a good indication of the rest of the season. "We're a good team this year, and I expect great things from us."

The Blazers' next game will occur at Wheaton on April 23 at 4:30 p.m.
