Boys' varsity soccer bombs Knights

Blazers Stadium, October 25 --

For their sixth consecutive win, and fifth consecutive shut out, the boys' varsity soccer team (9-4) defeated the Wheaton Knights by a score of 2-0. Both goals were credited to senior co-captain Kevin Fallet.

Fallet scored the first of his two goals by knocking in a pass from sophomore defenseman Ismail Lapp-Kamara in the fifth minute. Fallet provided a follow up by putting the ball in front of the net where it bounced off a Wheaton defender in the 54th minute.

While it had no meaning for the future of the season, the game was Senior Night. The seniors were celebrated both before the game when they took pictures with their parents and when they all left the field with three minutes remaining amid applause and a standing ovation.

Fallet was awestruck when asked about what the game meant to him. "Oh my god, it just means a lot. I've worked my butt off to get to here,” he said.

Senior co-captain George De Rossi agreed with Fallet, thinking that game is a culmination for them all. "Its just a really big social event. We had a bigger crowd,” said De Rossi. "We all get to play together all at the same time for the maybe the last time; it probably won't happen in the playoffs.”

Blair dominated the entire game, succeeding in getting 19 shots on goal, 16 more than Wheaton managed to get off. Blair was close on many of these chances, hitting the crossbar multiple times.

The Blazers were still able to keep their high level of intensity despite the match being seemingly meaningless and coming off of an emotional division clinching battle against Blake. Head coach John Haigh credits the seniors for keeping the team on track. "I think the seniors excitement helped motivate the team and play a strong game,” Haigh said.

Haigh also highlighted seniors Jorge Pacheco and Eric Colbert for helping the team win. "Jorge stood out, he played hard. And Eric Colbert continued to to play strong games of late,” Haigh said.

With the playoffs just around the corner, the team must now get ready for the increased level of play and intensity. Haigh highlighted some things that the team needs to work on before their matchup Friday against Kennedy. "[We will] practice the little things. Like free kicks and corner kicks. Those are key in the playoffs,” Haigh said.

De Rossi believes that this team is special and they have something going for them. "We're making history this season.”

The boys' varsity soccer team will play its first playoff game, at home, on Friday, Oct. 28 against Kennedy at 7 p.m.
