Blazers burn Cavaliers for eight goals

On Wednesday, Sept 18, in a game that was never close, Blair's soccer team routed Kennedy High School's Cavaliers 8-0.

Blair's soccer team was generally indifferent about the victory, despite playing extremely well throughout the game.

The Blazers first struck in the tenth minute, when forward Matt Poness, a senior, passed the ball to forward Erik Coronel. Coronel fired the ball to the back of the net for a score.

Less than two minutes later, Blair upped its score to two on a goal by forward Franklin Alvarez, a senior. Midfielder Andrew Shoenfeld, also a senior, was credited with an assist on the play.

With just under 16 minutes to go in the first half, forward Alieu Terry, a senior, scored on a beautiful one-touch shot.

Fifteen minutes later, Blair scored a fourth time, with Coronel earning his second goal of the game on a pass from forward Jack Eisen-Markowitz, a sophomore.

In the eighth minute of the second half Eisen-Markowitz scored, bringing Blair's tally to five. Two minutes later Eisen-Markowitz netted another goal, on an excellent long shot that Kennedy's goalie deflected into the net.

Blair scored two more goals after that, one each from Mohammed Kayati and Justin Craver.

The referees called the game with 1:15 to play.

The boys credited the ease of the victory to the weaknesses of their opponent rather than to their own merits.

Coach Adrian Baez was more optimistic. He cited the Blazers' improved accuracy on offense. "We finished. We put the cherry on top, which is very important."

However, Baez was also critical of his team. "Our defense is bunching up, and we missed too many breakaways. We're about to play our hardest opponents, and our weaknesses will show more."

In its next five games, Blair will play Springbrook, Northwest, Walter Johnson, Whitman, and Churchill high schools. All of these schools have perennially solid soccer teams.

"We are the powerhouse here," said Baez. "We are the strong team. Now we have to prove this. I'm not gonna back down, no one is. We're the Blazers."
