Watkins Mill beats Blazer boys, dropping record to 0-2

At the end of the first quarter in today's boys' lacrosse match against Watkins Mill, the two teams seemed fairly matched. The score was tied at 0-0, an equal amount of shots had been fired at each goalie, and while the situation in the midfield was lackluster for the Blazers, it was equally so for Watkins Mill. However, the Wolverines surged ahead in the second quarter and didn't look back, defeating the Blazers 10-4.

Coach Robert Gibb believes that the slip occurred because of the team's inability to work as a unit and generate opportunities. He said that in today's game especially, many of the midfield and attack players tried to carry the "whole weight of the team on their shoulders" instead of looking to other offensive players for help.

This method worked for senior co-captain Josh Gotlieb-Miller, who scored three of the Blazers' four goals in today's game. For the most part, though, the Blazer defense is what kept the team in check. "Our defense has been our one bright spot this year, but you can only defend for so long," said Gibb of the team's inability to convert strong defensive clears into scoring opportunities.

Senior Jonathon Gregory also had a standout game; after picking up lacrosse just this year he has already gained a starting spot on the team and has scored two of Blair's five season goals, proving that he is a strong force in the midfield.

Today's loss puts the Blazers at 0-2 for the season, after a disappointing showing against Poolesville on March 22, which the boys lost 11-1. The boys will be looking for their first victory on March 30 as they travel to Einstein to take on the Titans at 7:00 p.m.
