Boys beat Churchill to improve to 3-6 on season

JAN 7, NELSON H. KOBREN MEMORIAL GYMANSIUM-

The Blair Blazers once again fell short of putting together a full game, but still managed to escape with a narrow 72-68 victory over the Churchill Bulldogs. The Blazers let an 11-point halftime lead slip in the closing minutes of the game and were forced to rely on senior leadership with under a minute remaining to pull out the victory.

However, in the second half the Bulldogs were able to score 45 points compared to their 23 point first-half dryspell. The bulldogs took the lead with 5 minutes to go in the game and the Blazers were unable to tie until 58.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Alonzo Woods made an athletic steal and took it to the rack for an easy layup to tie, and on the very next play, he intercepted a pass to set up a shot by fellow senior Ryan Sessoms. Forward Sessoms was fouled and made both of his free throws to give the Blazers a 72-68 lead and win the game. Sessoms led all scorers with 17 points on the night, with senior David Cheeks coming second with 14.

The Blazers face Gaithersburg on Friday, Jan 10, and look to keep their small winning streak going.
