Blazers will beat Sherwood

On Monday night at Blazer Stadium the Blair Blazer football team defeated the Magruder Colonels 21-14 en route to its second homecoming victory in a row. The win secured another winning season for the Blazers. With standout performances from the O-Line and the backfield the Blazers physically whooped the Colonels.

The playoffs are out of reach for the Blazers but they continue to play for pride and respect. They have a 5-3 record going into the game against Sherwood High School and will have their hands full.

Sherwood has a very well-rounded offense that relies on the run as much as the pass. The Blazers' secondary will be tested by Sherwood's big, fast, physical receivers.

The secondary has been somewhat of a weakness all season--many games were changed by big plays in the passing game. Early in the season, Northwest sophomore quarterback Ike Whitaker carved the secondary like a thanksgiving turkey. More recently against Quince Orchard, junior corner Josh Garcia was beat on a fly pattern for a score.

If the Blazers are to win this game they must eliminate the big plays and keep the ball out of the hands of the Sherwood offense. Sherwood is susceptible to the run and Blair boasts the best running attack in the county. If the Blazers control the ball most of the game and get lucky a few times this should be a Blair victory.

Cal's Call: Coach Short should give the ball to seniors Jermaine Jack and Felix Ruiz and once Sherwood starts to put eight and nine men in the box, he should go over the top to senior Avon Jackson. The Blazers will win. They will upset Sherwood 24-21.
