Girls' tennis wins 7-0 against Springbrook despite windy conditions
BLAZER TENNIS COURTS, Sept. 15
The girls' tennis team upped their record to 3-1, dominating all seven matches against the Division III Springbrook Blue Devils. The Blazers improved their net game and played consistently despite the windy weather.
At first singles, junior Sneha Kannan faced Springbrook senior co-captain Grace Hahm. Hahm made several key mistakes, including many net serves and lobs that landed out. Kannan took advantage of Hahm's inconsistent serves and returns with low, strong hits. After a 40-minute match, Kannan was victorious by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Shilpa Kannan made use of powerful serves and deep-court hits, and also handed a double bagel match, 6-0, 6-0, to senior co-captain Paula Deguzman. Third singles senior co-captain Bonnie Ding likewise dominated, playing a 6-1, 6-3 match, as senior co-captain Priyanka Gokhale, who won 6-3, 6-0 at fourth singles.
In the doubles arena, the first doubles team of senior co-captain Jasleen Salwan and freshman Deepa Chellappa won the game's longest match against juniors Michelle Okwali and Michelle Kim. The Blue Devils played well along the net, but also returned a number of wide balls, which gave Blazers the 6-2, 6-2 win. At second doubles, sophomores Elissa Shiau and Tiffany Chang made several key net plays, winning the 6-2, 6-0. At third doubles, senior co-captain Amy Li and freshman Ann Choi won their match 6-0, 6-1.
Despite the win, Blazers felt their performance could have been better had it not been for the gusty conditions. "We made mistakes we shouldn't have made," Chellappa said. Choi also commented that "some of the balls were wacky" in the wind. According to Shilpa Kannan, the balls tended to fall quickly and land close to the corners.
Both Springbrook coach Ross White and coach David Ngbea were pleased with Blair's overall performance. "They're a consistent team, and they're very courteous on the court," said White. Ngbea especially commended the Blazers for playing well in spite of the weather. "There were tough environmental conditions, but I think they hung in there; I think that they played well," Ngbea said.
The girls' tennis team plays its next home game on Thursday, Sept. 20 against Blake at 3:30 p.m.
