Students viewed a 45-minute documentary yesterday during 5th period to commemorate and discuss the fiftieth anniversary of the Brown v. Board decision. The film, titled With All Deliberate Speed, included a historical background of the event, clips of student interviews, and perspectives from relevant officials.
According to Assistant Principal Patricia Hurley, the viewing of the video was prompted by superintendent Jerry Weast's county-wide push for activities and projects to celebrate the historic event. The movie aired on PBS earlier this year, and was edited by NSL teacher Glenn O'Neil. It was originally 71 minutes, but was cut down to fit it into two 45-minute blocks and allow for classroom discussion.
The video contained interviews with members of the Blair IMPACT club, including juniors Julyssa Lopez and Eric Glover, making it particularly relevant to our school, said O'Neil. "Blair is a diverse area, but we tend to isolate ourselves," he added. "We have to be courageous enough to learn about each other's cultures."
