Boys' tennis beats Northwest 6-1
The boys' tennis team earned another victory today, beating Northwest 6-1. This impressive score none-the-less broke this season's 14 match winning streak the team held before today.
Top singles player senior Michael Price had difficulties with his backhand and perception throughout the game and was overcome by the top Northwest singles player. His depth perception also caused some mistakes as he repeatedly over-ran the ball, getting him too close to make the accurate or powerful returns that he needed.
Only one other match presented obstacles for the Blazers when number two singles player senior Gordon Su played against a Northwest "pusher" who consistently hindered Su's attack. The Northwest player reflected each of Su's shots and just waited for Su to make mistakes. This kind of playing caused the points to go by much slower than usual and the game to last noticeably longer than all the rest. But Su was patient and after he won said that the Blazers should have won all the games without many problems but they were a little overconfident and didn't take the Northwest team very seriously before hand.
The Blair doubles teams made their presence known today by wining their matches with some of the largest leads. Blair's strong doubles teams will help secure the team's performance throughout the season and, coach David Ngbea expects, will win at least two out three doubles matches against every school they face.
Many players expressed confidence going into the match and most games went as expected. But for Ngbea, the loss today caught him by surprise. "We shouldn't have had problems till next week. Next week should tell us what we look like [for the season]." said Ngbea.
The boys' tennis team's next match will be against Whitman at Blair courts as 3:30.
