A team of Blair High School students was awarded fifth place in the Canon International Envirothon this past summer. The Blair team was also the first to represent Montgomery County for Maryland.
Maryland was the host for this year's competition, which took place in Emmitsburg, Maryland at Mount Saint Mary's College. Teams from 41 states and six provinces from Canada competed in areas involving soil, forestry, aquatics, wildlife, oral presentations, and agricultural preservation. Competition for each team begins at the county level; teams then go on to states; and then the international level.
According to the Canon Envirothon website, the purpose of the competition is to raise awareness among students about issues concerning the environment. The event is hosted by a different state or province each year and in addition to the actual competition, Canon sponsors social, cultural, and educational events during the duration of the five day competition.
Teams compete in five testing/training stations and an oral presentation. Experts in the specific field serve as judges for the teams and at the conclusion of the competition scores are combined to determine the winners.
The first place team was from North East High School representing Pennsylvania. The members of the Blair team were seniors Rebecca Pass, Emily Tsui, Easha Anand, Paula Wang, and Valerie Shen. The sponsor for the team was Magnet teacher Tran Pham.
