Blazers lose war to Warriors

The Blair coed volleyball team ended a mediocre season tonight with a loss to Sherwood High School at home in four sets, 25-23, 20-25, 12-25, 19-25.

The Blazers gave the 11-1 Warriors a good fight, but the more highly skilled Warriors were always able to find an open hole in the defense. In the first set the hole was in the backfield; in the third and fourth sets it was in the middle of the court.

Coach John Mott was able to turn the fate of this season around as he led the Blazers to five victories in the last seven games, after starting the season 0-5.

"We're playing so much better as a team," Mott explained after the game. "The last half of the season is so much more indicative of what we can do than the first half was."

The Blazers suffered a mental breakdown in the third set as Sherwood went on a nine-point run to close it out. Bad serving and too much miscommunication led to many gaps in the defense. Junior Brad Gee, who is "on fire as of lately," according to Coach Mott, had some missed opportunities.

"It was a tough game," Gee said. "They're a very good team. We were able to keep most of the games pretty close though, so I'm not too disappointed."

The Blazers have a good chance of playing the Warriors again in the playoffs, which start on Thurs. May 6.
