The boys' volleyball team lost at Richard Montgomery, 10-15 12-15, Thursday night in their first game back from Spring Break. The Blazers took a big lead midway through the second game, but were unable to hold off a strong Richard Montgomery team that eventually overcame a 7-point deficit to win the match.
In the first game, the Blazers dug themselves a hole, falling behind by as many as six points. Richard Montgomery won the game on a controversial pass that coach Rajesh Rathnam claimed was a "carry."
After falling behind 0-2 in the second game, the Blazers staged a 10-1 run that put them up by 7 points. After a timeout, Richard Montgomery put on a run of their own, rallying to tie the game at 12 before finally putting the match away.
Blair was led by senior team captains William Hwang, who had 9 kills and 3 aces, and Sang Ahn, who had 7 kills. It was a hard fought match featuring many long volleys.
Rathnam says that the team fared pretty well against Richard Montgomery, which he pointed out is a tough opponent. "They're one of the best teams in the county," he said. "We hung around with them pretty well so we must be up there too."
