Blazers blow by Warriors

BLAZER STADIUM, Oct. 10–

The varsity girls' soccer team (6-2-2) recorded its sixth shutout of the year on Monday night with a 2-0 win over Sherwood (5-2). Blair started off strong, scoring immediately and never relenting.

Blair controlled the tempo throughout the entire game, constantly maintaining possession of the ball thanks to strong midfield play. "[Midfielders] Delia Trimble and Alanna Gangloff had great games,” senior Jamie Kator said.

Just two minutes into the game, Kator sent a through ball to the right side of the penalty box. Junior Lisa Bianchini blew by the Sherwood defense, controlled the pass and snuck it past the Sherwood goalie. "Getting that goal in the first two minutes really set the tone of the game,” Kator said.

Blair dominated the first half with ten shots compared to only two for Sherwood. Nine minutes into the second half, Kator received the ball near the top of the box, dribbled by a defender and smashed the ball into the upper ninety past the diving Sherwood keeper.

The two goals were all the Blazers needed. "If we score two goals, that looks pretty good,” head coach Robert Gibb said. "We were tenacious on defense.” Gibb was also very pleased with the play of senior defender Rachel Smith. "She was all over the field…she was outstanding,” he said.

The hardest part of the schedule, which included division games against Walter Johnson, B-CC and Quince Orchard, is over for the Blazers. The four remaining games are all against sub-.500 teams. "This was the most difficult division opponent,” Gibb said. "We did what we needed to do.”

The varsity girls' soccer team will play its next home game on Wednesday, Oct. 12 against Paint Branch.
