Blazer Bash a hit with students

More than 200 students attended the Blazer Bash in the SAC Friday, May 12, according to 2007 Class President-elect Anjana Mohanty. The dance, which featured performances from many Blair clubs, ran from 7:30 to 11:00 p.m.

Many clubs, such as the Breakdancers, the Middle Eastern Dance Club and the Carribbean Club, entertained Blazers throughout the night. Students danced to hip-hop and R+B played by a DJ during the times between performances.

The Blazer Bash, Blair's first major dance since Homecoming in November, was organized and hosted by the 2007 Class Government to raise funds that will eventually be used for next year's prom, according to Mohanty.

The Caribbean Club performed throughout the night, as their visually stunning displays of coordination and movement in unison dazzled onlookers. The club's members, however, wish they could have done even more. "We've been preparing for this for a couple weeks," said senior Micah Anglan, captain of the club. "We were hoping to put in more routines."

Anglan noted that the club shortened their performance to fit within the event's tight schedule. "Everyone had to have their spotlight," he said. Nonetheless, many who saw the clubs perform agreed with Anglan's observation that "overall, it was hot and spicy."

Other performers included a cadre of breakdancers, who stunned viewers with their seemingly superhuman feats of acrobatics. Many in attendance continued to watch the breakdancers even after the end of their scheduled performance, awed with their skill and sense of rhythm. The Middle Eastern Dance Club and Hispanic Club also impressed students with their shimmering costumes and complex, well-coordinated routines.

Students were also offered free food and drinks, including pupusas and a variety of other international dishes.

Many in the SGA feel that the event was a success. "We sold over 200 tickets — more than we had expected—and raised some money for prom," Mohanty noted. "It was a fresh idea," said senior Sebastian Johnson, former SGA president, "and it looked like the students really liked it.

Mohanty attributes the night's success to the 2007 Class Government's decision to reschedule the dance, which was originally slated for April 21, in order to give students more time to buy advance tickets. "It's really a good thing we rescheduled it — so many people were able to show up, and we had plenty of time to prepare," she explained.

By the event's end, many Blazers felt that the dance was well worth the entry fee. Nearly all in attendance lingered until the very end, staying to indulge in the music and dancing until the SAC's lights came back on and the DJ spun the night's last track. Said junior Samarth Gola, "The music was bumping."
