Science Bowl team members to compete at national level
A group of five Blair students placed first in the Maryland Regional Science Bowl competition on Feb. 28, qualifying them for the national competition.
During the regional competition, Thomas S. Wootton High School placed second in Maryland, Sidwell Friends School placed first in D.C., and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology took first place in Virginia.
Blair's team competed against 14 other schools in the Maryland/ D.C. area and answered questions relating to the subjects of biology, chemistry, astronomy, physics, mathematics, earth science and computer science.
The Blair Science Bowl team includes seniors John Shen, Anran Wang, Stanley Wang and Ning Bao and junior Randy Li. Magnet chemistry teacher Tran Pham coaches the team.
The format for the Science Bowl is "round robin first and then double elimination," according to senior participant John Shen. Teams answer toss-up questions worth four points and, if they answer correctly, they are awarded a bonus question worth ten points. Shen noted that Blair lost during the double-elimination round last year and achieved a close win this year with the help of a "last-minute question" on an elementary particle.
The team has high expectations for the National Science Bowl Competition. Junior team member Randy Li expects the team to do well if they prepare. "The winning is fun; the studying isn't that fun, but you have to do it," he said.
The national championship, including 62 first place regional winning teams, will be held at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland from April 29 to May 3.
