Blair student to compete in national research symposium

Senior Christina Feng won first place and $4000 at the Maryland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). Senior Linda Xu took second place and senior Kevin Fang was awarded an Honorable Mention.

Ten Blair students competed at the Maryland JSHS, which was held at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase on Mar 3 and 4. Feng, Xu, and seniors Elizabeth Inkellis, Sei-Wook Kim and Jenny Yuan participated in the paper division of the competition, in which seven students competed and from which state winners were selected. Fang and seniors Sneha Daya, Samantha Hong, Sean Kelly and Amanda Way competed in the poster division, in which 25 students competed and from which the three honorable mention winners were selected.

Feng, Xu and Fang will receive trips to the US Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO to participate in the national level of the JSHS from Apr 30 to May 4. Feng won the chance to compete for $20,000 in the "competitive round" at the national JSHS. Xu won $1000 and will participate in the "noncompetitive round" at the national level. Fang won $500 and will attend the national symposium as a student delegate. All other attendees received $50 for participation.

Dr. Glenda Torrence, Blair's Magnet Research Coordinator, recieved the $500 faculty award for mentoring the first place winner, and Blair won the high school award for the same reason. The school also received a plaque for Feng's achievement.

Kenneth Arnold, from River Hill HS, received third place at the Maryland JSHS. Ninety-six noncompetitive delegates from schools across the state attended the competition as well.
